A Retropie Project

  • Aftermarket buttons were easy to install. I ended up drilling two new holes for buttons on the sides. Mapping buttons is another story.
  • Mapping in Emulationstation was likely a huge lift, getting it to interface with that many emulators. I think a better alternative is the combination hotkey to an unused face button, but have it present an overlay that lets you map the controls on the fly depending on the game. If you intend on actually gaming retro games through your 1up, you’ll be using an 8bitdo. And, in my opinion, that sort of makes the whole modification of the 1up not seem as interesting.
  • I got a little too fixated out how to handle the limited amount of buttons to each emulator. I really suggest trying to get 8 face buttons, with a start and select button, if you intend on playing it as an arcade. Besides offering some unique demo modes to display, it’s common to be stopped to a halt in gameplay because you’re missing some key mappings.
